Astronomy incentive at the University of Bologna

You get a one-off payment of at least 597 EUR, paid once, for studying the Astronomy degree (Astronomia, class L-30) at the University of Bologna. The exact amount depends on your household income and can be higher than the minimum. The university works it out as a share of the maximum set for your degree class. Female students with a low ISEE value get 90% of that maximum; other students get between 50% and 70%. ISEE is the official Italian measure of household income and assets. The money comes from the university's own STEAM fund, which sets aside 23,952.29 EUR for physics and astronomy students.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy (Laurea, L-30) at the University of Bologna.
• Timing: You initially enrolled for 2025/2026 and are now enrolled again for 2026/2027.
• Credits: By 30 September 2026, you will have earned at least two-thirds of the credit points required for your first year of study.
• Still on the course: You have neither switched to another degree programme nor dropped out of your studies.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Non-EU students who do not hold an Italian identity card can log in using their university login details.
• Income: Applicants from all income brackets are welcome to apply. A lower ISEE score results in a higher level of funding and a better ranking.

How to apply

Apply online via ‘Studenti Online’ using your SPID login by 27 October 2026, 12:00. Your ISEE documents 2026 must also be submitted by the deadline. Applicants will then be ranked according to the number of credits earned, their grade point average and their income. The results will be displayed on ‘Studenti Online’.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is narrowly defined: only students of astronomy in Bologna who enrolled in a specific year and have achieved the required minimum number of credit points are eligible to apply, meaning that the eligible group is small. If you meet these criteria and earn your first-year credits by the deadline, your prospects are good. A lower household income and good grades will improve your position in the ranking and increase the amount of funding you receive.
