Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme

You will receive a means-tested grant for postgraduate study. It covers your tuition fees and living costs. There is no fixed amount; the amount is based on your actual needs, once you have demonstrated that you are unable to finance your studies in any other way. Two points distinguish this grant from most others. Firstly, only half is a grant, which you are allowed to keep. The other half is a loan that you must repay – starting six months after you complete your studies – and a guarantor must co-sign the contract. Secondly, it does not cover travel abroad, clothing, furniture or living expenses for your family. A Master’s programme is funded for the entire duration of your studies. A PhD programme is funded for the first two years only; after that, you must seek funding from other sources. The Aga Khan Foundation launched the programme in 1969 and has since supported more than 1,500 students.

Who can apply

• Home country: You are from one of the selected countries, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Tajikistan. If you currently live in Canada, Portugal or the USA but are originally from one of these countries, you are also eligible to apply.
• Degree level: You already hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent qualifications and professional experience) and are embarking on a postgraduate programme, usually a master’s degree. Applications for a PhD programme will only be considered from outstanding candidates.
• Timing: You are currently in the first year of your degree programme. If you have already started your postgraduate studies, you cannot apply.
• Type of course: You are studying full-time. Part-time and short courses are not eligible for funding. You cannot use the scholarship to study in the United Kingdom or Russia.
• Grades: You have achieved excellent results at school.
• Financial need: You really cannot afford to fund your studies yourself. Please regard this as a last resort and submit a realistic plan that also includes several other sources of funding.
• Track record: You demonstrate leadership potential, professional experience, achievements outside school or in business, and a commitment to voluntary work.
• Age: Applicants under 30 will be given preference, although this is not a strict requirement.

How to apply

You should apply via the local office of the Aga Khan Foundation or the Aga Khan Education Service in your home country, not via the head office in Geneva. The application period begins at the start of the year and ends around 31 March, although local deadlines may be earlier. If you are shortlisted, a local selection committee will conduct an interview with you to discuss your financial situation, your academic results, your extracurricular activities and your career plans.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a competitive, global programme that awards only a limited number of scholarships each year, meaning that good grades alone are not the deciding factor. The eligibility criteria are strictly defined by country, stage of study and demonstrable financial need, which narrows the pool of applicants to particularly suitable candidates. If you meet these requirements, can demonstrate a genuine need with a credible funding plan, and show genuine leadership qualities and commitment, your prospects are good. It is advisable to apply early via your local representative office.
