About this scholarship
International Youth Foundation Scholarship
For a research stay of at least one month at a centre of the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO) in Asia, you will receive around 2,000 EUR. You will also receive a contribution towards supplementary health insurance. The exact amount is determined on a case-by-case basis. It depends on the duration of your stay, the cost of living in the host country, your accommodation and your level of study. The funding is provided by the Fondation Jeunesse Internationale (FJI), which operates under the umbrella of the Fondation de France. It funds student research stays in Asia exclusively through the EFEO. The focus is on archaeology and art history, but contemporary projects with an economic focus are also welcome.
Who can apply
- Study level: You are enrolled on a Master’s or PhD programme in Asian Studies or the Humanities.
- Where you go: You have been offered a research post at one of the EFEO centres in Asia (e.g. Pondicherry, Kyoto, Tokyo, Bangkok, Jakarta or Taipei).
- Nationality: You must be a French national. In exceptional cases, applicants who are not French nationals may also be considered.
- Age: You are under 35.
- Preferred topics: You’ll have a better chance if your project focuses on current issues from an economic perspective, or if you’re travelling to a country you haven’t looked into before. This is a plus, but not a requirement.
How to apply
You must submit a complete application to the EFEO. This should include a personal statement, your CV, a description of your proposed project with a timetable, and letters of recommendation from your supervisor and the head of the host EFEO institution. The application deadline for the academic year 2026–2027 is 7 April 2026 at 18:00 Paris time.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be a French national, have secured a place on a Master’s or PhD programme in Asian Studies, and have a confirmed research post at a specific EFEO centre in Asia. This small, clearly defined group means there are fewer competitors than with an open scholarship. If you clearly meet these requirements and can present a project that aligns with the EFEO’s research priorities, your chances are good.
