About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a scholarship covering your annual college fees as well as a small cash allowance. It is awarded for up to three years, for as long as you are required to pay college fees. St Cross College, University of Oxford, awards this scholarship to a doctoral student in the humanities. The exact amount of the scholarship is determined by the College.

Eligibility

  • Degree: You are starting a DPhil – that is what a doctoral degree (PhD) is called at Oxford.
  • Field of study: Any subject within the university’s Faculty of Humanities, such as history, languages, philosophy, literature or art.
  • Where you study: You are a PhD student at the University of Oxford and a fellow at St Cross College.
  • College choice: You should list St Cross College as your first choice on your application form for admission to the Master’s programme.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities.

How to apply

You apply directly to St Cross College. Please list it as your first choice on your application for the Master’s programme at Oxford. The application deadline is 7 March.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: you must be starting a PhD programme in the humanities at Oxford and list St Cross’s as your first-choice college. This keeps the pool of eligible applicants small. If you meet these conditions and are offered a place at Oxford, your chances of securing the scholarship are quite good. The more difficult step is gaining admission to a PhD programme at Oxford, as competition is fierce. If you list St Cross as your genuine first choice, you will remain in the running.
