What the Alfred W Rich Scholarship gives you

This is one of the Sessional Prizes at the Slade School of Fine Art – small cash prizes awarded once a year to recognise outstanding work by art students. The Slade is the art school of University College London (UCL), based in Bloomsbury in central London. The amount of the prize money is not disclosed. The Slade refers to these awards as ‘small prizes’; they are therefore more of a modest one-off sum than ongoing financial support.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a student at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL in London.
• Field of study: Fine Art. The Slade teaches painting, sculpture and various media within the fine arts.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• How you are chosen: You do not need to apply. The prize is awarded to a student selected internally on the recommendation of the Slade Professor who heads the school.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this prize directly, so there are neither deadlines nor application forms. It is awarded to a Slade student selected by the Head of the School. The only way to be shortlisted is to be enrolled at the Slade and to produce outstanding work throughout the year. Your chances depend on the teaching staff taking notice of your artwork, rather than on a compelling application.
