What the Bogue Research Fellowship gives you

You will receive funding for a research placement in a laboratory in the USA. Whilst there, you will carry out a project and bring the knowledge you gain back to UCL. The amount of funding is not fixed. A committee will decide on a case-by-case basis and will cover your return flights, as well as your accommodation and living expenses. In addition, a small budget is provided for travel or cultural excursions within the USA, amounting to up to 10% of the total amount. The programme awards approximately 75,000 GBP (approximately 87,000 EUR) per round. The number of grants awarded depends on how much each applicant requires. Most stays last from a few weeks up to 6 months. You may apply for up to 12 months, but you must have valid reasons for doing so. The scholarship (a grant for a research stay) is awarded by the Faculty of Life Sciences at UCL and funded by a bequest from Dr Yule Bogue.

Who can apply

• Who you are: You are enrolled as a PhD student at UCL or are a member of UCL’s academic staff, for example as a postdoctoral researcher.
• Field of study: Your field of research is in physiology or a related life science, or in basic biomedical research. Clinical medicine and psychiatry are not included, unless you are conducting basic research within a clinical department.
• Where you go: A laboratory in the US has already agreed to take you on.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities. You must ensure that you comply with the US entry and vaccination requirements yourself.
• Return to UCL: Upon your return, you will be guaranteed funding or a salary at UCL for at least 6 months.
• Timing: You are not yet nearing the end of your studies. PhD students who are in the ‘final phase of their research’ or are about to enter it are not eligible to apply. Furthermore, you must not interrupt your studies during your stay.

How to apply

You should request the guidelines and the application form by email from the Dean’s Office and then submit all documents as a single, consolidated PDF file. There are two application rounds per year, with deadlines on 3 April 2026 and 22 October 2026, both ending at 3. A committee assesses the applications on the basis of their academic quality. You will be notified of the result approximately 4 to 8 weeks after the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is restricted to life sciences researchers at UCL who are travelling to the USA; the pool of applicants is therefore small and highly specialised. The current success rate stands at around 60%, which is high for a research grant. If you clearly fit the subject area, have a laboratory in the US that is willing to host you, and can justify the duration and benefits of the trip, your chances are good.
