What you get

You get a fixed monthly amount from Erasmus University Rotterdam if your studies fall behind because you spent time on social activities or on top-level sport. A committee decides how many months you get and sets the amount for you. The support runs for a maximum of 6 months over your whole degree, not per year.

Do you already receive a supplementary grant (aanvullende beurs, extra student support from the Dutch agency DUO)? Then you get an extra top-up equal to that DUO amount. Payment starts only after the normal length of your degree has passed and lasts up to 12 months.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled full time at Erasmus University Rotterdam and stay enrolled during the months you are paid.
• Reason for the delay: You lost study time because of voluntary or social activities, or because of top-level sport.
• Top sport status: For the sport route, you need an official EUR top-sport status from Erasmus Sport.
• Proof: You can show the delay falls within the normal length of your degree. If you are Dutch or another EEA student entitled to student finance, it must fall within your basisbeurs period (your basic student grant period).
• Still studying: Once you graduate, you no longer get the remaining months of support.
• Nationality: Open to Dutch, other EEA and non-EEA students enrolled at the university.

How to apply

You report the study delay and book an appointment with a student dean (studentendecaan, a staff member who advises students) through the EUR website. A committee then reviews your case. It decides how many months of support you get, based on how closely your activities relate to your study programme.

How realistic are your chances?

This support is narrowly targeted. It is only for enrolled EUR students who can prove a study delay caused by social activities or top-level sport, and the sport route needs an official status. If you clearly fit those conditions and can document the delay, your case is strong, because the eligible group is small. The decision rests on how well your situation links to your studies, so a clear, well-evidenced explanation matters most.
