What you get

You receive a fixed monthly amount for each month your studies were delayed by circumstances beyond your control, up to 12 months in total across your whole degree. If you also get a supplementary grant (aanvullende beurs, extra DUO support based on your parents' income) from DUO, the Dutch student finance agency, you get an extra top-up equal to that supplementary grant. The money comes from Erasmus University Rotterdam's Student Support Fund (Studentenondersteuningsfonds). It is paid monthly, starting after the standard length of your degree, meaning the number of months your programme is officially meant to take.

Who can apply

• University: You study at Erasmus University Rotterdam and stay enrolled full time during the months you are paid.
• Study delay: You fell behind during the standard length of your degree for one of these reasons: illness, pregnancy and birth, a physical, sensory or other disability, special family circumstances (for example caring for a relative), a poorly organised programme, or a course that lost its accreditation and gave no degree.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply. Dutch and other EEA students entitled to DUO student finance qualify for the period of the basic grant (basisbeurs). Non-EEA students qualify for the standard length of their degree.
• Timing: Once you graduate, any remaining months of support are not paid out.

How to apply

Report your study delay to a student dean (studentendecaan) by booking an appointment through the university's website. The dean gives you the application form. The Student Support Committee then decides how many months of support you qualify for. There is no fixed deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive scholarship. It is compensation you claim once you meet the conditions, so there is no fixed number of winners to beat. What matters is whether you can show a clear link between your circumstances and the delay, which the committee checks case by case. If you document that link well and stay enrolled full time, your prospects are good.
