Florentino García Martínez Research Master Scholarship

You receive a one-off grant of 1,000 EUR towards the costs of the two-year Research Master in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. This is a top-up, not a full scholarship or a monthly payment. The grant was funded by alumnus Jan Overmeer. It is named after Florentino García Martínez, a former director of the university's Qumran Institute, which studies the Dead Sea Scrolls and early Judaism.

Who can apply

• Programme: You are enrolled in, or admitted to, the two-year Research Master in Theology and Religious Studies. It runs full time, is taught in English and counts 120 ECTS credits.
• Field of study: You want to specialise in the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism or the Dead Sea Scrolls.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply, both Dutch and international students.
• Admission first: You can only apply once you have an offer of admission to the Research Master, or once you have already started it.
• Grades: An academic committee picks the winner on academic merit, so you need a strong academic record.

How to apply

You apply through the Qumran Institute once you hold your admission offer. The deadline is 1 March for non-EU/EEA students and 15 May for Dutch and EU/EEA students. An academic committee then decides based on your academic record.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is cut very narrowly. You must be in Groningen's two-year Research Master and focused on the Hebrew Bible, early Judaism or the Dead Sea Scrolls, so very few people are eligible at all. If you clearly fit that specialisation and have a strong academic record, your prospects are good. The 1,000 EUR is a modest top-up rather than a headline prize, which also keeps the field small.
