Buitenlandfonds scholarship (Leiden University)

You get a one-off grant to help pay for a study period abroad. It is a single payment, not a monthly stipend. The amount is not published and depends on which group you belong to. The money comes from a Humanities fund at Leiden University that helps students gain international experience. Two groups are covered: Leiden students who go on exchange to the United Kingdom or Ireland, and Taiwanese students who come to Leiden through the exchange with NCCU (National Chengchi University in Taiwan).

Who can apply

• Programme: You take part in the Harting programme, an exchange scheme open to students of the Bachelor's in English Language and Culture at Leiden. Taiwanese students on the Leiden/NCCU exchange also qualify.
• Level: You are a Bachelor's student. Master's students are also named on the general Leiden page.
• Where you go: If you go out from Leiden, you study in the UK or Ireland. If you come in from Taiwan, you study at Leiden.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply for the outgoing grant. For the incoming grant you must be Taiwanese.
• Credits: Your study abroad must count towards your Leiden degree.
• Travel safety: The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs must not advise against travel to your destination.

How to apply

You cannot apply on your own. Your study programme, English Language and Culture, nominates you. There is no strict deadline. Once nominated, you get an email explaining the next steps. There is no separate selection round.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is tied to two specific programmes, so almost nobody outside them competes for it. If you are on the Harting scheme or the Leiden/NCCU exchange and your programme nominates you, your prospects are strong, because there is no selection round to pass. The real hurdle is getting onto the exchange in the first place, not the funding.
