Horizon Fund travel grant

You get a one-off payment of 200 to 600 EUR towards an academic trip abroad. The amount depends on your destination: 200 EUR for Europe, 300 EUR for the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey, 400 EUR for the USA and Canada, 500 EUR for Asia, Central and Southern Africa and Latin America, and 600 EUR for Australia and New Zealand. You get the money after you return. The fund comes from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and helps its students pay for trips linked to their studies.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled full time at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Humanities.
• Study progress: You have earned at least 60 ECTS credits (about one full year of study) by the time you leave.
• Purpose of the trip: You travel abroad for a clear academic reason: study, a work placement, research, fieldwork, presenting a paper at a conference, or a summer or winter course.
• No double EU funding: You do not receive an EU grant such as Erasmus for the same trip.
• Once per year: You have not already applied to the Horizon Fund in the same academic year.

How to apply

You apply online with your transcript, CV, a budget and a motivation letter. There are three rounds each year: 15 September to 15 October, 15 December to 15 January, and 15 May to 15 June. Apply in the same academic year as your trip. A committee decides based on your motivation, how the trip adds to your studies, your study progress and your extracurricular activities.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is narrowly cut. Only full-time Humanities students at the UvA with at least 60 credits and a genuine academic trip abroad can apply, so the pool is small. If you fit those conditions and show clearly how the trip supports your studies, your prospects are good. Apply for the round that covers your departure month.
