About this award / prize

Marnoco e Sousa Prize

You will receive a book credit of 700 EUR, which you can spend on books or services provided by the publisher Edições Almedina. The Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra (Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra) in Portugal awards the prize once per academic year; it is funded by Edições Almedina. If two or more students win jointly, they will share the 700 EUR.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are a student at the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra.
  • Degree level: You are enrolled on the ‘Licenciatura em Direito’ programme, the Bachelor’s degree programme in Law.
  • Field: Your work or your grade is in Legal and Political Sciences (Ciências Jurídico-Políticas). Public International Law does not count.
  • What you submit: You must submit an original written piece on a topic from this subject area. It must have been written by you during the current school year, be in Portuguese, and must not have been submitted to any other competition before.
  • If no works are entered: If no one submits an entry, or if the jury does not consider any entry to be of a high enough standard, the prize will be awarded to the student with the highest mark in a course offered by this department, provided that the mark is at least 15 out of 20.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You deliver four copies of your written work to the Faculty's Administrative Services. Put them in a sealed envelope addressed to the Director of the Faculty of Law, marked "Prémio Doutor Marnoco e Souza", with your contact details and the title of your work. For the 2025/2026 academic year the deadline is 31 July 2026. A jury of three faculty members reviews and ranks the works.
