About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a grant of monthly grant of around 500 EUR to spend part of your degree programme at a partner university in another European country or to undertake a work placement there. The exact amount depends on your destination and ranges from approximately 350 to 600 euros per month. For study periods, 450 EUR/month is paid for Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway and Sweden. For countries such as Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, 400 EUR per month is paid. For countries such as Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, Romania, Turkey and the Baltic states, 350 EUR per month is paid. Work placements are paid at a higher rate: 600, 550 or 500 EUR per month for the same three groups of countries. The money helps with living and travel costs, but does not cover them in full. A study period is funded for up to 5 months (one semester) or 9 months (two semesters). An internship is funded for up to 4 months. Funding is provided through the EU’s Erasmus+ exchange programme via the University of Aveiro.

Eligibility

  • University: You are studying for a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Aveiro.
  • Study stage: You have already completed your first year of study. First-year and first-semester Bachelor’s students are not eligible to take part.
  • Recent graduates: You can also undertake an Erasmus placement after you have graduated, provided that you apply before you finish your degree and complete the placement within 12 months of graduating.
  • Time limit: At each stage of your degree programme (Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD), you can spend up to 12 months abroad as part of the Erasmus programme.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they are studying at the University of Aveiro.
  • Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.

Students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those who choose an environmentally friendly means of travel may receive additional financial support from the International Division. If the funding has been exhausted or if your stay is longer than the period covered by the grant, you can still take part as a ‘Zero Grant’ student: whilst you will not receive any financial support, you will retain all other Erasmus benefits.

How to apply

You submit a preliminary application online via the University of Aveiro’s PACO portal. The Erasmus coordinator in your department then selects the students. You must then also apply directly to the host university abroad. Application periods open once or twice a year; please therefore check the current call for applications before you begin.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open exclusively to students who are already enrolled at the University of Aveiro, so you won’t be competing with the general public. If you meet the academic progress requirements and choose a partner university with a valid agreement, your chances are good. Make sure you have some of your own money set aside for the first few weeks, as the first payment may not arrive until after you have left.
