About this scholarship
What you get
Whilst studying at a university in Madeira, you will receive 50 EUR per month as a supplementary grant. This is paid for the academic year and may be renewed, meaning it can cover the duration of your studies. The Regional Government of Madeira (Governo Regional da Madeira) pays the grant through its Office for Higher Education (Gabinete do Ensino Superior). You can receive it alongside grants from other providers, and these other grants are not taken into account in the means test.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are enrolled at a university or higher education institution in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, or are taking a distance-learning course (including at the Universidade Aberta).
- National grant: You are already receiving a grant from the National Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES). You may also apply if your DGES renewal has been refused because you have not met the academic requirements, or if you are studying via distance learning and do not receive a DGES grant. In these cases, your income will be assessed separately.
- Financial need: Your household income per person (the ‘C’ figure in your DGES notification) is no more than 9,600 EUR per year for 2026/2027.
- Madeira link: You completed your entire secondary education at a school in Madeira. Alternatively, you have studied for at least 6 years at a school there, or you (or a close family member with whom you live) are an emigrant who lived in Madeira and completed secondary education abroad. Children of Portuguese emigrants who are originally from Madeira do not need to meet the ‘place of study’ requirement.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- One degree level: You cannot receive this grant for two courses at the same level of study.
How to apply
The online application process consists of two steps: first, a preliminary registration, then the full application. You will need to upload your national secondary school leaving certificate (Ficha ENES) and your final DGES scholarship award letter. For 2026/2027, the application window runs from 1 November to 30 December 2026. If your DGES notification arrives after this date, you will have 20 working days from the date of the notification to submit your application.
