About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a monthly stipend to support your work on your doctoral thesis. The Fundação Oriente (East Foundation) reviews the amount of the scholarship each year, so no fixed amount is announced in advance. In addition to the scholarship, you will receive:

  • A return flight from your country of residence to your country of study, if you need to move.
  • Accident insurance for the entire duration of the scholarship. It covers the costs in the event of death, permanent disability, medical treatment, repatriation and funeral expenses.

The scholarship is valid for 12 months. You may extend it in stages up to a total of 36 months, during which you will be entitled to the monthly scholarship and 30 days’ leave. The Foundation supports doctoral research projects in the social sciences and humanities that focus on relations between Portugal and the Far East.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are enrolled on a PhD programme.
  • Research topic: Your dissertation will focus on relations between Portugal and the Far East. Projects dealing with the collections of the Museu do Oriente (Museum of the Orient) will be given priority.
  • Field of study: Your degree subject is in the social sciences or humanities.
  • No double funding: You have not yet received a scholarship from any other organisation for the same thesis.
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. There are no age or gender restrictions.
  • Track record: Strong grades, past work, publications and conference papers count in your favour.

How to apply

Registration and applications are made online via the Fundação Oriente website. Please check first whether a call for applications is currently open: the call is not issued every year, and the foundation may restrict it to specific PhD thesis topics. The dates for the current round have not yet been finalised. Taking part in the competition does not guarantee an award. The foundation selects applicants on the basis of academic achievement and the relevance of their research, and may consult experts for their opinion.
