Erasmus+ mobility grant at UTAD

You will receive a monthly grant to enable you to complete part of your studies in another European country. You will receive up to 500 EUR per month for a study period at a partner university or for a work placement in a company, at a university or at a training centre. The exact amount depends on your destination country and your institution. Your stay can last between 2 and 12 months. The grant covers only part of your additional costs whilst abroad, but not your full living expenses. It is awarded by the Universidade de Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) in Vila Real, Portugal, as part of the EU’s Erasmus+ programme. You will continue to pay your regular tuition fees to UTAD, not to the host institution, and all the modules you complete abroad will count fully towards your degree. If you are already receiving social assistance (SAS) or have a disability, you will automatically receive an additional allowance without having to submit a separate application.

Who can apply

• Your university: You are enrolled as a student at UTAD.
• Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD student.
• Study progress (for a study stay): As a Bachelor’s student, you must have completed at least 60 ECTS and be in your second year of study or above. Master’s and PhD students should have earned approximately 30 ECTS. There are no minimum credit requirements for work placements.
• Where you go: An EU country, an EEA/EFTA country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or an EU candidate country (North Macedonia, Turkey, Serbia). For a study visit, UTAD must already have concluded an agreement with the host institution in your field of study.
• Field of study: Every subject taught at UTAD.
• Nationality: You are a national of an EU country or an associated country, or you are a permanent resident of Portugal, a stateless person or a recognised refugee.
• Grades: The selection process takes into account your average mark and whether you have any outstanding modules that you have not yet passed. Your language skills also play a part (a level of approximately B2 in English is recommended).

How to apply

First, check the list of UTAD partnership agreements for your degree programme and speak to your programme’s Erasmus coordinator. You should then submit the online form for the declaration of intent to study abroad using your UTAD login. For the 2026/2027 academic year, the deadline is 25 February. The selection will be made by your programme director or your Erasmus coordinator.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open exclusively to UTAD students; therefore, the pool of applicants is limited to your own university, and each degree programme selects its own candidates. If you can demonstrate that you have the required credit points, have good grades, have no outstanding exams and choose a destination for which UTAD already has an agreement in your field of study, your chances are good. Decide on your host university at an early stage and speak to your Erasmus coordinator, as study places depend on the agreements currently in place.
