About this scholarship
What the Vegetarian Charity grant gives you
You will receive a one-off payment of up to about 815 EUR (normally not more than £700) if you are a young vegetarian or vegan and are currently facing genuine financial difficulties. This is a one-off grant, not a monthly scholarship. The grant comes from ‘The Vegetarian Charity’, a British charity that supports people under 26. You can use it towards course fees and your studies, or for practical items you need. Examples include a computer, art supplies, equipment for a course, furniture, bed linen or school uniforms, shoes and school trips for children. If you need more than the grant covers, you must explain in your application how you will cover the remaining cost.
Who can apply
- Age: On the payment date, you are subject to 26.
- Diet: You are a committed vegetarian or vegan. You eat neither meat nor fish, nor any food for the production of which an animal must be killed. There is no set minimum duration, but if you have been a vegetarian or vegan for one or two years, this underlines your commitment.
- Money need: You are currently facing a financial emergency. The charity does not provide support for emergencies that you do not expect to face until a later date.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, including those from countries outside the UK.
- Field of study: Any topic is allowed, and you don’t have to be a student at all.
- References: You must name two people who can confirm your eating habits. These must not be family members, flatmates or fellow students; the charity will contact these people directly in writing.
- Not funded: Start a business, pay off debts or raise money for another charity.
How to apply
Download the application form from the charity’s website. Upload it via the online portal, along with a covering letter, your CV and your two most recent bank statements. You can apply at any time, as there is no fixed application deadline. A decision is usually made within two to three months and will be communicated to you by post or email.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is aimed at a narrowly defined target group: you must be under 26 years of age, be a committed vegetarian or vegan, and currently be in financial difficulty. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate genuine financial hardship by providing your bank statements and a detailed cover letter, your chances are good. Make sure to apply well in advance of your 26th birthday, as the funds must be paid out whilst you are still under 26.
