Labex CAP - Immersion Scholarships

Benefit

You will receive a 10-month contract paying 1,647 EUR gross per month to enable you to work in a French museum or cultural heritage institution whilst undertaking your doctoral research. The Labex CAP research cluster, run by the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, places six PhD students each year in partner museums such as the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Picasso, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the INHA and Sèvres. Their work was tailored to the needs of the respective institution, for example in preparing an exhibition or researching the collections and archives. They gained genuine professional experience in a museum, which is helpful if you are aiming for a career that combines research and cultural work.

Eligibility

• Level: You are already enrolled on a PhD programme or are starting one this academic year.
• Field: Your research focuses on art history, cultural studies or a related subject area within the field of museums and cultural heritage, and is in line with the profile of a partner institution.
• University: Students at Labex-CAP universities (EHESS, EPHE, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) are given priority, but students from other French or foreign institutions may also apply.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Fit: Your career history, research expertise and the topic of your dissertation meet the requirements of the post advertised by the museum.

How to apply

Please submit your complete application documents by email by the deadline of 2 September. Following a preliminary selection round, interviews will take place at the museum to which the applicants have applied. The selection panel consists of staff from the institution and members of Labex CAP.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is highly selective: six places are available each year, each of which is linked to a specific research project at a museum. Consequently, only PhD students whose thesis matches this profile exactly may apply for the individual places. If your topic closely matches one of the advertised positions and you can provide convincing references, your chances are good. The alignment between your project and the museum’s requirements is more important than a polished application.
