Uppsala Student of the Year

As a student at Uppsala University in Sweden, you will receive a one-off grant of 150,000 SEK (about 13,500 EUR). You will also become part of the ‘Wallumni’ network, which brings together everyone who has received a scholarship from the Anders Wall Foundation. Members meet regularly for events and study trips. The Anders Wall Foundation established the award in 2000 and has been presenting it to one student every year since then.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at Uppsala University.
• Study phase: You have completed most of your degree programme but have not yet obtained your bachelor’s degree.
• Grades: You’re doing very well at school.
• Student life: You can get involved in student life in Uppsala, ideally through the student union (studentkår) or a ‘student nation’ (a traditional Uppsala student fraternity).
• Impact: You have shown particular commitment to supporting other students, or have set up business ventures linked to the university.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: Any nationality, provided you are studying at Uppsala University.

How to apply

You cannot apply yourself. You must be nominated. Anyone associated with Uppsala University may propose a candidate, for example students, teaching staff, alumni, student societies, faculty councils or academic departments. The nomination must include a detailed written justification. A jury comprising representatives from the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the University Management and the student unions will then select the winner. The deadline for nominations is 22 March.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student is honoured each year, and you have to be nominated rather than apply directly. It is therefore a highly competitive award. What sets the candidates apart are demonstrable achievements in their work within the students’ union or a ‘Student Nation’, as well as a genuine commitment to helping other students – not just their grades. If you’re that student in Uppsala and someone is prepared to nominate you with a strong case, you’ve got a real chance.
