Eva and Oscar Ahrén Research Foundation Grant

You will receive a project grant of up to 150,000 SEK (about 9,000 EUR) for medical research. The amount will be paid to your university and covers a period of 2 years (24 months). If you reapply, the funding may be extended to a total of up to 3 years. In addition, there is a separate travel grant of up to 30,000 SEK (approximately 2,700 EUR) to enable you to attend a scientific conference at which you will present your own work in the form of a talk or a poster. The funding comes from the Eva and Oscar Ahrén Foundation in Sweden, which was established in the mid-1940s to support medical research.

Who can apply

• Field: You carry out scientific research, primarily in the field of medicine.
• Where you research: Your research is being carried out in Sweden. Researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm are given priority.
• Career stage: You have already completed your PhD and are establishing your own independent research programme. Early-career researchers are preferred, ideally following a postdoc (a research position after completing a PhD) abroad. Supervising PhD students is viewed favourably.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they carry out their research in Sweden.
• For the travel grant: You will be giving a presentation of your own at an academic conference. Study visits, extended stays at other universities and travel undertaken as part of a Bachelor’s degree programme are not eligible for funding.
• What the grant does not cover: You must not use the project funding to buy construction machinery, pay your own salary or take on new staff.

How to apply

You set up an account and apply online via the foundation’s website. Applications are only accepted between 1 October and 31 January. Decisions are made at a meeting at the end of March, and you will receive a response at the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is highly targeted. You must be conducting medical research in Sweden, and the foundation openly gives preference to early-career researchers who have completed a PhD and are establishing their own research programme, particularly at the Karolinska Institutet. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you fit this profile and can demonstrate published or preliminary results, your chances are good. It is advantageous to apply early within the application window.
