About this scholarship

Hildur Johnson Memorial Fund for Education

You will receive a one-off grant as compensation for a degree programme that you have already completed. The page does not specify the amount involved. The grant is awarded for a university degree programme or a study trip abroad that is of benefit to police work. The Swedish Police Union (Polisförbundet) manages the fund, which was established in 1977 following a donation from the entrepreneur Hugo Johnson in memory of his wife Hildur. The grant is paid out once a year, once you have completed the course or study trip.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a trained police officer. Police students also qualify if they ran a special project abroad as part of their training.
  • Union membership: You are an active member of the Swedish Police Union (Polisförbundet).
  • Subject: Your university studies are in the fields of policing, sociology, social and behavioural sciences, law or languages. Study periods abroad relating to policing or trade union work will also be taken into account.
  • Timing: You have already completed your degree or your trip, and it was no more than two years ago that you finished it. You cannot be currently studying.
  • Where you study: You may study in Sweden or abroad, provided that your course of study relates to the subject areas mentioned above or is of particular value to police work.
  • What is not funded: Basic police training in itself does not count.

How to apply

Complete the trade union scholarship application form and submit it by 1 September to the trade union region (federation region) in which you work. Your region will add a recommendation and forward the form to the trade union office, where a committee will decide on the application. Applications received after 1 September will not be processed until the following year.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria for this scholarship are very narrow. You must be a member of a police trade union, have recently completed a qualifying degree or a period of study abroad, and be studying one of a limited number of specified subjects. This keeps the pool of eligible candidates small, meaning that a well-suited applicant with clear proof of having completed a degree programme or a travel report has a good chance of success. Please apply before the single deadline on 1 September, as late applications will simply have to wait a year.
