About this grant / loan

What the SVCR grant gives you

If you have a severe physical disability, you will receive a one-off grant to help fund aids and equipment that make your daily life easier. The amount of the grant is not fixed. It is decided on a case-by-case basis and paid out upon presentation of receipts after you have purchased the item. The funds come from a Stockholm-based foundation, the ‘Stiftelsen Svenska Kommittén för Rehabilitering’ (SVCR), which has been managing the funds bequeathed to it in wills since the 1910s. You can apply for funding towards, amongst other things, a specially adapted mattress, a chair or wheelchair, household appliances (washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher), a computer, a tablet or smartphone, a bicycle (including an e-bike, tandem or tricycle), spectacles, guide dog training, a gym membership or a sports wheelchair, as well as training costs such as a driving licence or studying abroad (for example, at Gallaudet University for deaf students). The following costs are not covered: a car or vehicle modifications, structural alterations to your main residence, or treatments such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, dental treatment or alternative therapies.

Who can apply

  • Disability: You have a significant physical disability: severe mobility impairment, deafness or a visual or hearing impairment. Staff who work with these groups, as well as researchers in the field of disability, may also apply, but only to a limited extent.
  • Proof of need: You can ask a doctor, physiotherapist or social worker to issue a certificate confirming your disability and stating that you require the specific item you are applying for.
  • Income: You may enclose a copy of your most recent tax assessment notice, as your income will be taken into account.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, but the assistive devices must be used in Sweden.
  • Timing rule: You must submit your application before making the purchase. It is not possible to claim the grant retrospectively. If you have previously received an SVCR grant, at least two full years must have elapsed; in the case of computer equipment, four years.

How to apply

You must submit a completed and signed application form, together with your medical certificate and your tax assessment notice, once a year between 1 November and 1 March. The next application window runs from 1 November 2026 to 1 March 2027. You will receive a written decision by the end of June. There are no preliminary decisions.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very strictly defined. You must have a severe physical, hearing or visual impairment, demonstrate a specific need and disclose your income, meaning that only those who clearly meet the criteria can apply. If this applies to you and you apply within the annual application window before purchasing the item, your chances are good. A clear medical certificate linking the grant to your specific needs is more important than anything else.
