Erasmus+ travel grant at Uppsala University

Every Erasmus+ exchange student gets an automatic travel grant on top of the monthly Erasmus payment, and travelling in a climate-friendly way pays more. The amount depends on the straight-line distance between Uppsala and your course location, measured with the EU's official distance calculator. Standard travel pays from 28 EUR for a short trip (10-99 km) up to 1,735 EUR for the longest journeys (8,000 km or more), for the round trip. If you travel mostly by bike, train, bus or car-sharing, you get a higher rate. For example, 285 EUR instead of 211 EUR on a 100-499 km trip, or 785 EUR instead of 580 EUR on a 3,000-3,999 km trip. From 4,000 km the rate is the same either way. Green travellers also get up to 2 extra funded days to cover the longer journey time. A boat trip does not count as green travel, but a short ferry leg is allowed if the rest of the trip is green.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You have been accepted for an exchange at a partner university in an Erasmus+ programme country, arranged through your department, faculty or a central Uppsala agreement.
• Enrolment: You are a registered full-time student at Uppsala University when you apply, and you plan to graduate from Uppsala. Doctoral students qualify if the research abroad is part of their PhD.
• Study load: Your exchange must be full-time study.
• No double EU funding: You do not hold another EU-financed scholarship for the same period.
• Green travel proof: For the higher rate, most of the round trip must be by bike, bus, train or car-sharing. Car-sharing needs at least two people in the car, with receipts (rental, fuel, tolls).

How to apply

The travel grant is part of the main Erasmus scholarship application in the MoveON system, the university's online application portal. To claim the higher green rate, tick that you plan to travel green when you apply. Apply 1-15 November for exchanges starting in the spring semester, or 1-15 May for exchanges starting in the autumn semester.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive award. The travel grant comes automatically with every Erasmus+ exchange scholarship at Uppsala, so if you are accepted for the exchange, you receive it. The only real choice is how you travel, since bike, train, bus or car-sharing raises your payment and adds up to 2 funded days. Keep your receipts, because you upload them in MoveON at the end of your stay.
