Gibbs Prize (Medieval and Modern Languages)

Depending on the category, you will receive a one-off cash prize of up to about 690 EUR (£600). This is awarded in recognition of outstanding examination results; you will therefore receive it as a one-off payment rather than as ongoing financial support. The University of Oxford funds the prizes from a bequest by Charles D. D. Gibbs. Several individual prizes are awarded each year. The best overall result in the ‘Honour School’ is awarded the highest sum. Smaller sums (from around 230 EUR / £200) are awarded to the runner-up, the best dissertation, the best subject area, the best result in linguistics and the best work in the field of medieval languages.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Degree stage: You are currently sitting your final exams as part of your Bachelor’s degree at the ‘Honour School of Medieval and Modern Languages’.
• Grades: You are one of the best in your year group, either overall or in a particular subject, as the prizes are awarded for the very best exam and academic results.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The examiners award each prize automatically on the basis of your final results, unless otherwise specified in the relevant subject guidelines. If no candidate is deemed to have performed well enough, a prize may not be awarded that year.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is awarded each year to recognise the best academic achievements at an Oxford Honour School, meaning that only a handful of students are honoured across all categories. It is not possible to apply for it specifically. The only decisive factor is how well you perform in your final exams and your dissertation. If you are already amongst the best in your year, one of these prizes is within reach, but for most students it remains out of reach.
