What the Best Project Certificate gives you

You will receive an official certificate from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the UK’s professional body for mechanical engineers. This recognises you as the student who has produced the best final-year project on your degree programme this academic year. You may include this award on your CV. A certificate is awarded once a year for each IMechE-accredited bachelor’s degree programme. Please note that this is a non-monetary award: you will receive recognition, not money.

Who can get it

• Level: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree.
• Course: Your degree is recognised by the IMechE; this is usually a degree in mechanical engineering.
• Year of study: You can be in any year of your degree.
• Achievement: You have written the best dissertation as part of your degree.
• Nationality and university: Applicants of all nationalities may apply to any university accredited by the IMechE.

How it is awarded

You cannot apply yourself. Your department head must nominate you using the official form. The nomination must be received by the IMechE by 30 September each year.

How realistic are your chances?

You are not competing with external applicants. For each accredited degree programme, only one certificate is awarded to the best project, and your own head of department decides who is nominated. It therefore depends on whether your project is rated as the strongest within your degree programme. If your work stands out, ask your department to nominate it before the deadline in September.
