Jacobsen Essay Prize

You will be awarded a philosophy prize for producing an outstanding academic paper whilst studying at the University of London. The papers may cover any area of philosophy, from epistemology and metaphysics to ethics and the philosophy of language. The jury may select several prize-winners in the same year. Previous winners have included research students from University College London and King’s College London. The prize is awarded by the Institute of Philosophy at the School of Advanced Study, which was established in the 1980s and is funded by a donation from Mr J. A. B. Jacobsen. The amount of the prize money is not disclosed.

Who can apply

• Level: You are enrolled on a research degree programme such as an MPhil, PhD or MPhilStud.
• University: You are enrolled at the University of London.
• Field: You’re interested in philosophy, whatever the subject.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

You submit a philosophical essay. This is then assessed by the Jacobsen Committee, which is made up of academics from the philosophy departments of the various colleges of the University of London. The deadline and the exact entry requirements are not published on the public website.

How realistic are your chances?

Only philosophy students at the University of London are eligible to enter, so the pool of entrants is small from the outset. The quality of an individual essay is the deciding factor, and the judging panel sometimes selects several winners in a single year. If you meet the criteria and can write a compelling, original essay, it is definitely worth taking part.
