University of Oxford - A Physics Prize for a MPhys Project in Condensed Matter Physics

What you get

For an outstanding final dissertation (MPhys project) in the field of solid-state physics, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 189 EUR (£150). This field of study focuses on solids and liquids, for example, how materials conduct electricity or become magnetic. The Department of Physics at the University of Oxford awards this prize for outstanding achievement in the ‘Final Honour School of Physics’ – the examinations and projects that make up your final degree result.

• University and degree: You are studying on the MPhys programme at the University of Oxford, the four-year integrated Master’s programme in Physics.
• Field: Your final-year project focuses on solid-state physics.
• Performance: Your project is one of the best in this field.
• Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply.

How to apply

There is neither a separate application process nor an application deadline. The prize is awarded automatically on the basis of the MPhys project that you submit as part of your final examinations.

How realistic are your chances?

You cannot apply for this prize directly. It is awarded each year to a single outstanding project in the field of solid-state physics undertaken by a final-year physics student at Oxford; the pool of candidates is therefore small, but the standards are high. The prize recognises achievements already made, rather than the additional effort one might put in beyond working on a compelling project.
