About this grant / loan
What the Advanced Learner Loan gives you
You get a government loan that covers the course fees for a college or training course in England. There is no fixed amount. The loan matches your actual course fee, so how much you borrow depends on the course and the provider. Student Finance England runs it for the UK government. Two things make it unusual for a loan. First, if you take an Access to Higher Education course (a course that prepares adults for university) and then finish a university degree that qualifies for student finance, the balance you still owe is wiped, so you never repay it. Second, you can also apply to the Loan Bursary Fund for help with extra costs such as childcare, travel, course materials or accommodation if you must live away from home. Your provider decides how much you get.
Keep in mind this is a loan, not a grant. Interest is charged from the day of your first payment, and you start repaying only once your income passes a set threshold.
Who can apply
- Age: You are 19 or older on the first day of your course.
- Course: Your course is a Level 3, 4, 5 or 6 qualification (for example A levels or similar) at an approved college or training provider in England.
- Income: Any income can apply. There is no means test and no credit check.
- Where you study: Your course is in England. Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have their own separate funding.
- Residence: You live in the UK on the first day of your course. You have also lived in the UK, its overseas territories, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for the past 3 years in a row.
- Status: You are a UK national, an Irish citizen, or hold settled status. Refugees, EU nationals with settled or pre-settled status, migrant and frontier workers, people under humanitarian protection and several other groups can also qualify.
- Course exceptions: Two types of course use different student finance instead: a Level 4 or 5 course with Higher Technical Qualification approval, and any Level 4, 5 or 6 course starting on or after 1 January 2027.
How to apply
First check with your college or training provider that the course qualifies, and ask them for a "Learning and funding information" letter, which you need to complete the application. Then apply online through the Student Finance portal, or by post if you cannot apply online. There is no general deadline. Your timing follows your course start date, and you usually get a confirmation letter within about 2 weeks.
How realistic are your chances?
This is not a competitive award. Eligibility does not depend on income, grades or a credit check, so if you meet the age, course and residence conditions, you get the loan. The real question is not whether you qualify but whether taking on a repayable loan suits you, since interest starts from the first payment. The write-off rule for Access to HE courses and the extra Bursary Fund make it more attractive than a plain loan for many adult learners.
