About this grant / loan
What the Tuition Fee Loan gives you
You will receive a government loan of up to about 11,400 EUR per year (up to 9,790 GBP) to cover the tuition fees charged by your university or college. For accelerated degree programmes, the upper limit is higher, at up to approximately 13,700 EUR (11,750 GBP). The money goes directly to your higher education institution, so your tuition fees are paid automatically. It is provided by the UK government via ‘Student Finance England’. The loan is ‘means-tested’: the amount does not depend on your family’s income. Any eligible full-time student can borrow the full amount, regardless of how much their parents earn.
Who can apply
- Level of study: You are starting your first bachelor’s degree, a PGCE or a teacher training qualification (Cert Ed).
- Type of study: You are studying full-time at a recognised university or college in England.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Nationality and residence: You are a British national or an EU or international student with valid residence status. As a rule, you must have lived in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Gibraltar for the three years prior to the start of your studies.
- Income: No means test. You will receive the full amount, regardless of your household income.
How to apply
You can submit your application online at gov.uk/student-finance or using a paper form. It takes around four weeks to process, and you must submit a new application for each academic year. There is no fixed deadline, but please submit your application in good time to ensure the funds are available before you start your studies.
How realistic are your chances?
This is not a competitive scholarship, but an entitlement. If you meet the residence and study requirements, you will receive the loan; there is therefore no selection process to pass. Please note that you will have to repay the loan. Repayment only begins once you have completed or withdrawn from your studies and are earning an income above the repayment threshold; it is based on your income rather than the amount of the debt. Interest accrues from the day you take out the loan.
