Hammermen Medal and Award

As an outstanding engineering student in the Glasgow area, you will receive a one-off award of about 350 EUR (£300). Up to eight of these medals are awarded each year. If you win one, you will also be in with a chance of winning the separate Prince Philip Prize, worth approximately 2,300 EUR (£2,000), which is awarded to two medal winners. Medal winners are also invited to join the ‘Incorporation of Hammermen of Glasgow’ free of charge. This engineering guild has supported metalworkers since 1536 and now supports all engineering professions in the west of Scotland.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are studying at one of the four universities in Glasgow (Glasgow, Strathclyde, West of Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian) or at one of the four universities of applied sciences in the Glasgow region.
• Study stage: At university, you are in your fourth year of an engineering degree (having already completed three years). At a university of applied sciences, you are a student in the final year of an HNC or HND programme, a graduate of an apprenticeship scheme, or an apprentice.
• Field of study: All areas of engineering, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering, shipbuilding, welding technology, electronics and shipbuilding.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. There is no income requirement.

How to apply

You do not apply directly to the Guild. Instead, please use the Hammermen’s standard application form and submit it via the relevant member of staff at your college or university. The application deadline is 21 February. Your college or university will shortlist candidates and select the medal winners. The medal winners may then be invited to a brief evening interview for the Prince Philip Prize.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is subject to strict criteria: applicants must be studying engineering at one of the eight specified institutions in Glasgow and be nearing the end of their degree, which means that very few people apply. As up to eight medals are awarded each year, a high-achieving engineering student in their fourth or final year of study who meets these criteria has good prospects. The Prince Philip Prize is considerably more difficult to win, as it is awarded to only two medal winners.
