About this scholarship

Benefit

You will receive a one-off grant of up to about 5,800 EUR (£5,000) to fund your own project that benefits society. The money covers project costs such as travel expenses, equipment and other outgoings, and is paid as a one-off sum rather than a monthly allowance. You will carry out the project over a period of your own choosing. The grant comes from the Magnusson Fund at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), which was established in 2007 in memory of the former Chancellor Magnus Magnusson and is supported by donors such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Santander. Projects to date have ranged from international voluntary service and community work to business start-ups, health projects and sports coaching.

Eligibility

  • University: You are currently a student at Glasgow Caledonian University and are studying at the Glasgow campus, the London campus or the ALC campus.
  • Study stage: You are in your second year of study or above, are enrolled on a Master’s programme, or are a early-career researcher, such as a PhD student.
  • Your project: You have a project that benefits society, such as voluntary work, a community initiative, a start-up or an internship that helps others at home or abroad.
  • Field of study: Open to all subjects.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

Apply via the online form on the GCU website. Describe your project, list any partner organisations, and set out a budget and three main objectives. The application deadline is 16 February at 5. The GCU Foundation and its donors decide internally on the allocation of funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is open exclusively to GCU students from their second year of study onwards, as well as to early-career researchers, meaning that the pool of applicants is limited to a single university. It is your project idea that counts, not your grades: a clear, well-thought-out plan with a genuine social impact will stand out. If you can present a concrete project and a sound financial plan, your chances are good.
