Newcastle University - Scholarship in Marine Technology

Benefit

You will receive 10,000 EUR as a one-off payment for one academic year. Every year, 10 students receive this grant. The money can be used to cover your tuition fees or your living costs. It is funded by the shipping company Safe Bulkers Inc. and awarded on the basis of your academic performance and financial circumstances. You can study at a university in Greece, the United Kingdom or another country, including Newcastle University.

Eligibility

• Nationality: You are a Cypriot or Greek national and live in Cyprus.
• Field of study: You are studying a subject in the field of shipping or engineering, such as shipbuilding, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, cyber security, artificial intelligence, data science, maritime law or a Master’s programme in shipping trade and finance.
• University: Any country is eligible. Universities in Greece, the United Kingdom or elsewhere are all acceptable.
• Grades (school leavers): If you wish to start a degree course, you will need an offer of admission from a relevant higher education institution, as well as a school leaving certificate with a mark of at least 18/20 (Cyprus) or A-levels in mathematics or physics with a mark of B or above.
• Grades (current students): If you are already studying in the UK, you will need an annual average of over 60% or a 2:1. To enrol on a Master’s programme, you must have at least a British honours degree with a grade of 2:1, a Greek polytechnic degree with a grade of 7.5, or a ‘Very Good’ grade from another foreign university.
• Financial need: Your family income and family circumstances are taken into account when awarding the scholarships.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form on the Safe Bulkers scholarship website. The deadline for applications is 31 August. Based on your application, you will initially receive a provisional offer. The final decision will be confirmed once you have submitted your supporting documents.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. Only Cypriot and Greek nationals residing in Cyprus who are studying specific subjects in the fields of shipping and engineering are eligible to apply; consequently, the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. With 10 scholarships available per year and clear academic thresholds, a suitable applicant who meets the academic requirements and can demonstrate financial need has good prospects. It is advantageous to apply early with all documents ready.
