About this scholarship
University of Portsmouth Bursary
You will receive about 585 EUR (£500) per academic year for up to three years of your studies and will never have to repay the amount. The money will be paid into your bank account in three instalments in December, February and April. The University of Portsmouth funds this grant for full-time students from England whose family income is low. You can claim it in addition to student loans and, in many cases, other grants from the University of Portsmouth.
Who can apply
- Degree level: You are studying full-time at the University of Portsmouth to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
- Field of study: Open to all subjects.
- Where you're from: You are a domestic student from England. You can also apply if you have refugee status or are seeking asylum.
- Fees: You will pay the full tuition fees of £9,790 for 2026/27.
- Family income: Your household income is £25,000 per year or less.
- No fee sponsor: Neither an employer, nor an NHS organisation, nor any other funding body will contribute towards your tuition fees.
How to apply
No separate application is required. When you apply for means-tested funding from Student Finance England, please specify the University of Portsmouth as your place of study and agree to your income details being passed on to the university. Once your household income has been confirmed, the University of Portsmouth will automatically assess your eligibility. No interview or further action is required.
How realistic are your chances?
This is not a competition. If you meet the income threshold and the other eligibility criteria, you will receive the funding automatically, so there is no selection process in which you could be unsuccessful. The main exclusion criteria are a household income above £25,000 or having a sponsor who covers your fees. As long as you submit your application to Student Finance correctly and agree to the data verification process, your chances are essentially guaranteed.
