University of Aberdeen Business School PhD Studentship

You will receive your full tuition fees waived as well as an annual living allowance of approximately 7,900 EUR (GBP 6,600) for three years years of full-time doctoral study at the University of Aberdeen’s Business School in Scotland. In addition, you will undertake 10 to 20 hours per week of paid academic work as a research assistant. This means that you will assist with teaching, marking and research for undergraduate programmes. The Business School advertises this scholarship from time to time and funds up to three places per round in a selected research area.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are just starting a PhD programme and already hold a relevant Master’s degree (MSc) or are about to complete one.
• Field of study: Your research project falls within one of the following areas of the Business School: accounting, business administration, economics, finance or real estate.
• Grades: You have completed your Master’s degree with a grade of at least ‘Merit’ (a 2:1, with an average mark of around 65% or higher) and have written a compelling Master’s thesis.
• Nationality: This funding is aimed at students from the UK.
• Language: If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.
• Research plan: You have a detailed research proposal that aligns with the interests of at least two potential supervisors at the university.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the University of Aberdeen’s online application form by 16 May. If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview. The selection process takes place only occasionally; please therefore check whether a round is currently underway before applying.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined. It is aimed exclusively at students from the UK, applies only to five subject areas at business schools, and a maximum of three places are funded per round. If you clearly fit into these subject areas, hold a solid Master’s degree and submit a well-structured research proposal, the small pool of eligible candidates will work in your favour. The paid role as a teaching assistant also means that you will be assessed in part on your ability to teach and supervise undergraduate students, and not solely on the basis of your grades.
