About this award / prize

The Calderwood Prize

As the top first-year student in Algebra, you will receive a one-off cash prize of approximately 440 EUR. The prize is awarded by the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham. It was established with donations from former students and colleagues in memory of Dr Nora Calderwood, who taught pure mathematics in Birmingham from 1920 to 1963.

  • University: You are studying at the University of Birmingham in the School of Mathematics.
  • Study level: You are a first-year student.
  • Field of study: You are studying mathematics as a single-subject degree or as part of a dual degree programme combining mathematics with another subject.
  • Grades: By the end of your first year at school, you’ll be the best pupil at algebra.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

No application is required. The Faculty of Mathematics awards the prize automatically on the basis of your exam results in Algebra in your first year of study.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a one-off prize for the one first-year student who achieves the best results in algebra. It is not possible to enter, and your chances of winning cannot be improved in any way other than through your exam performance. As only one student wins each year, strong, consistent performance in algebra is the sole deciding factor.
