What the City University Bursary gives you

During your Bachelor’s degree at City, St George’s, University of London, you will receive up to about 5,750 EUR (£5,000) per year for up to 3 years as a grant towards your living costs and study materials. Depending on which part of the fund you are allocated to, the amount will be paid out either for one year or over the entire duration of your studies. You do not have to repay the money. The fund is financed by donors and alumni, including the Richard Reeve’s Foundation and the Hadyn & Joanna Cunningham Charitable Trust.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at City, St George’s, University of London.
• Degree: You are studying for a bachelor’s degree, e.g. a BA, BSc or BEng/MEng.
• Fee status: You have ‘Home’ fee status, which means you are classified as a UK student rather than an international student. As long as you have this status, you can apply regardless of your nationality.
• Financial need: Your household income, as calculated by Student Finance England, is £35,000 or less.
• Field of study: All compartments are open.
• First in your family: Preference will be given to applicants who are the first in their family to undertake a degree course, although this is not a requirement.
• Grades (Cunningham fund only): For this part of the fund, very good grades in the region of AAA at A-level or an equivalent qualification are also taken into account.

How to apply

You should submit your application during the annual application period, which in recent years has run until the end of February. First, Student Finance England must assess your income, and you must provide these figures to the university. In your application, you will need to write a personal statement explaining your financial situation. A panel of staff members then decides who will receive the funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is restricted to full-time undergraduates at a university with a household income of £35,000 or less, so the target group is already quite small. If you clearly meet the income threshold and – even better – are the first in your family to study at university, your chances are good. Go into specific detail in your personal statement: clear evidence of your financial situation is more important than a stylistically polished text.
