Benefit

You will receive full coverage of your PhD tuition fees, as well as an annual living allowance, which together amount to about 16,750 EUR per year for up to 36 months. The amount of the living allowance is based on the rates set by the UK Research Council. The scholarship is funded by a bequest from Sir Francis Hill, who served as Chancellor of the University of Nottingham from 1971 to 1978, and supports PhD students in the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Eligibility

• Degree level: You have been offered a place on a PhD programme at the University of Nottingham, or you are already in the first year of your PhD studies.
• Faculty: You are undertaking a PhD at the Faculty of Arts (e.g. English, History, Music, Philosophy, Modern Languages) or at the Faculty of Social Sciences (e.g. Business Administration, Economics, Education, Geography, Law, Political Science, Sociology).
• Where you study: You’re studying at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Please note that the scholarship only covers tuition fees at the UK or EU home rate; international students who are required to pay higher tuition fees are therefore not eligible for funding.
• Research plan: You have a clear research proposal for your PhD, setting out your objectives, methods and timetable.

How to apply

You apply via your own faculty using the scholarship application form, completing the section on your qualifications and your research proposal. Your supervisors and your faculty will then complete their sections and forward selected applications to the Researcher Academy. The faculty’s application deadline is at the end of April. During the selection process, the greatest weight is given to your research proposal (40% of the points), whilst support from your supervisors and faculty accounts for the remainder.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is awarded on a highly selective basis. Only PhD students from two specific faculties at a university are eligible to apply, meaning the pool of applicants is smaller than for open scholarships. If your research proposal is compelling, your supervisors support you and you apply via your faculty by the deadline, your chances are good.
