University of Edinburgh - Children of Employees Undergraduate Scholarships

What you get

The scholarship covers 50% to 100% of your undergraduate tuition fees at the University of Edinburgh for up to 5 academic years. It covers tuition fees only, but not living costs. It is renewed annually, provided you remain enrolled as a full-time student and your parent continues to be employed by the University. If the employed parent works part-time, the amount is reduced accordingly. The University of Edinburgh offers this programme to the children of its own staff; one scholarship is available per academic year.

Who can apply

• Your parent works here: One of your parents (or their spouse, civil partner or long-term partner who has helped to bring you up) must hold a permanent contract of employment with the University of Edinburgh, with their salary paid via the University’s main payroll.
• Length of employment: This parent must have been employed by the university for at least one full year prior to the academic year for which you are applying.
• Where you study: You must be studying at the University of Edinburgh. If you are studying at another university, you cannot apply.
• Level: You must be enrolled on a full-time bachelor’s degree programme. You may be a first-year student, a student changing career paths, or a student already enrolled.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
• Other funding first: Before applying for this scholarship, you must first have exhausted all state study grants and other scholarships.
• Not covered: A second bachelor’s degree and repeat years are not eligible for funding.

How to apply

The working parent completes an online form on behalf of their child. The deadline is usually 15 July. The relevant registrar at the college, or their representative, reviews the applications and decides who will receive the grant.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a scholarship with very strict selection criteria. One parent must have been employed by the City of Edinburgh for at least one year, and only one scholarship is awarded per year group. Whilst this keeps the pool of eligible applicants small, the fact that there is only one place available means there is genuine competition amongst those who meet the criteria. If you clearly meet the requirements regarding a parent’s employment and have already applied for the necessary government and other funding, make sure you apply in good time to maximise your chances.
