About this scholarship

What the Marshall Scholarship gives you

You will receive a full scholarship (covering all costs) for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for up to 3 years. This will cover your tuition fees in full, and you will also receive a monthly living allowance: 1,378 GBP per month (approx. 1,610 EUR) outside London and 1,690 GBP per month (approx. 1,970 EUR) in London, based on the 2024/25 rates. You will also receive return economy-class flights between the US and the UK, your visa costs and the UK health surcharge, as well as at least 3,000 GBP (approx. 3,500 EUR) extra for research, books and travel. The scholarship is administered by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission, a government body funded by the UK Foreign Office. Up to 50 scholarships are awarded each year.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a US citizen.
  • Your degree so far: You hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year US college or university, or will have obtained one before you commence your studies.
  • Grades: Your grade point average is at least 3.7 on the 4.0 scale. A rounded-up grade point average will not be taken into account.
  • When you graduated: For the 2027 intake, you finished your undergraduate degree after April 2024.
  • No prior UK study: You have never undertaken a degree programme to obtain a British qualification, nor do you hold any British GCSE or A-level qualifications.
  • What you study: Any subject at graduate level that leads to a UK degree. Some professional programmes are not funded: medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, law, MBAs and financial-economics master's.
  • Where you apply: You are applying in one of eight regions in the USA, depending on where you live, work or study.

How to apply

You should complete the online application form, attach three essays and three references, and submit the documents via your university, which must endorse your application. The application deadline is 29 September at 5 pm in your university’s time zone. If you are shortlisted, a regional selection panel will interview you in November.

How realistic are your chances?

This is one of the best-known and most competitive scholarships for Americans studying abroad. There are only up to 50 places available each year, and a minimum GPA of 3.7 is required just to be eligible. However, good grades alone are not enough to secure the scholarship. The selection panel assesses academic achievement, leadership qualities and your potential as an ambassador between the UK and the US in equal measure, so you need a strong track record in all three areas. Each US university may nominate a maximum of 24 candidates, so the competition begins within your own university.
