Earth Sciences Gibbs Prize

For outstanding academic achievement on the Earth Sciences degree programme at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 350 to 640 EUR (ranging from 300 GBP to 550 GBP). There are three separate prizes: approximately 640 EUR (550 GBP) for the best independent project in the third year of study, approximately 350 EUR (300 GBP) for the best essay in the third year of study, and approximately 350 EUR (GBP 300) for the best performance in the practical components of the degree programme. The prizes are funded by a bequest from Charles D. D. Gibbs and are awarded by the University of Oxford.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Field of study: You’re studying earth sciences.
• Study year: You are in your third year of study and are preparing for your final exams as part of your bachelor’s degree (the ‘Final Honour School’, the final exams at Oxford).
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Performance: Your exam results, your project, your essay or your practical work must be the best in your year group.

How to apply

You do not need to apply. The examiners select the prize winners based on your examination results and academic performance. In some years, the prize may not be awarded if no student stands out in particular.

How realistic are your chances?

Each prize is awarded to the best student in their category amongst third-year geosciences students at Oxford. The field of entrants is small, but the bar is set high. You cannot apply for the prize, nor can you promote yourself for it. The best course of action is to achieve outstanding academic results, as these alone determine the outcome.
