Dudley Stamp Memorial Award

You will receive a one-off travel grant of £500 (about 585 EUR) for a research trip, for example for fieldwork or data collection as part of your geography project. You do not need to repay the grant, and several grants are awarded each year. It is provided by the Royal Geographical Society (in conjunction with the Institute of British Geographers), which established it in 1967 to support geographers at the start of their careers with travel for their research.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student or a postdoctoral researcher.
• Where you study or work: You are enrolled at or employed by a UK university.
• Field of study: Your project is about geography.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Type of project (preference): Preference is given to projects that advance the field of geography internationally or forge links between geographers in the United Kingdom and abroad.
• Funding gap (preference): You will be given priority if you have not yet secured full funding for your fieldwork from a research council, your university or a similar source.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email; to do so, please send the RGS-IBG application form and a one-page CV. The application deadline is 23 November. In addition, two letters of reference must be submitted by the same deadline, one of which should be from your supervisor. A panel of experts will review the applications, and you will receive a response by mid-March.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is highly targeted. You must be a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher in Geography at a British university, which means the pool of applicants remains small compared to open scholarships. If you meet these criteria, propose a well-planned trip that clearly contributes to the advancement of geoscientific knowledge, and do not receive full funding from other sources, your chances are good. Several grants are awarded each year, and the selection panel rewards a compelling, feasible project with clear ethical principles and sound budget planning.
