About this grant / loan
What the Bob Sharples Studentship gives you
This is an annual scholarship (a research scholarship for PhD students) offered by the Department of Greek and Latin at University College London. It is intended to support research into ancient philosophy, i.e. the thought of the Greek and Roman worlds. The scholarship is named after Bob Sharples, a long-serving professor at UCL. Provided that academic progress is satisfactory, the funding may be extended. The department has not specified a fixed amount.
Who can apply
- Level: Primarily for PhD students. If no suitable PhD student applies, a Master’s student may be awarded the place instead.
- Field of study: You are conducting research into or studying ancient philosophy.
- University: You are applying for the Greek and Latin degree programme at UCL in London.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
There is no separate application form for this scholarship. You will automatically be considered for it once you have submitted a complete application for admission to postgraduate study at the Institute of Greek and Latin by 30 March. Selected students will be notified in July, and payments will begin in October.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding is very narrowly defined. You must apply to a specific department at UCL to work on a specific topic, meaning that only a few people meet the criteria. If you clearly fit the ‘Ancient Philosophy’ specialisation and submit your application for admission by the deadline, you will be considered without any further effort on your part. The scholarship place is initially reserved for PhD students, so Master’s students will only be considered if no suitable PhD student is available.
