About this grant / loan

What you get

If you already hold a degree from Northumbria University, you will automatically receive a 20% discount on the tuition fees for most Master’s and research programmes there. This is a reduction in fees, not a cash payment. If your programme lasts longer than one year, the 20% will be spread over the entire duration of your studies (on a pro rata basis). It is awarded by Northumbria University itself and applies to full-time and part-time programmes at the Newcastle campuses, as well as to distance-learning programmes. The discount applies exclusively to tuition fees. Examination fees, fees for the production of the dissertation and fees for professional registration are excluded.

Who can apply

  • Former Northumbria student: You hold a bachelor’s, master’s or research degree from Northumbria University or Newcastle Polytechnic, or are due to complete one this year. Graduates of study abroad, exchange and Transnational Education (TNE) partner programmes will also be considered, provided you have obtained your degree.
  • New course: You will be starting a full-time Master’s degree or a postgraduate research programme in September 2026 or January 2027. This also includes teacher training (PGCE).
  • Nationality: Open to applicants from the UK and abroad.
  • Field of study: Open to most Master’s programmes.
  • Self-funded: You pay your tuition fees yourself and do not receive financial support from any third party. Self-funded NHS students, including those who receive support from ‘Student Finance England’, are nevertheless eligible.
  • Not eligible: You already hold another Master’s or research scholarship from Northumbria University. Alternatively, you are in the second part of the MArch programme, undertaking a work-integrated degree, an NHS-funded programme or an integrated Master’s programme. A single module or a CPD qualification without a full bachelor’s degree from Northumbria University does not count.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The discount will be applied automatically if you state your previous Northumbria qualification when applying for the course and provide the relevant proof. If you defer your place on the course, the discount will lapse.

How realistic are your chances?

As this is not a competition, there is nothing to be won or lost. If you graduated from Northumbria University or Newcastle Polytechnic, are starting a recognised postgraduate course and are paying your own tuition fees, the 20% discount will be applied automatically. You will not be eligible if, for example, you are already receiving another scholarship from Northumbria University or are enrolled on one of the excluded degree programmes.
