Painters' Company Scholarship

You will receive about 5,900 EUR per year (£5,000) to study painting or drawing at the Slade School of Fine Art, which is part of University College London (UCL). The funding will commence at the start of your second year of study and will continue until you complete your Bachelor’s degree. As part of the four-year BA programme at the Slade, this usually amounts to three years of funding. You will also receive personalised artistic guidance, which involves regular one-to-one mentoring from an experienced artist. You will take part in the Painters’ Company’s ‘InPractice’ programme, which includes panel discussions with practising artists, and will be given further opportunities to exhibit your work. Upon graduation, you will become an Honorary Freeman of the Painters’ Company for five years, free of charge. The scholarship is awarded by the Painters’ Company, one of the historic guilds of the City of London, which has been providing financial support to art students in London since 2012.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the Slade School of Fine Art at UCL in London.
• Level: You are a first-year student and are about to start your second year of study.
• Field of study: You’ve specialised in painting or drawing.
• Nationality: You are normally a British national.
• Grades: You’ll need a strong portfolio of artistic work, as selection is based solely on merit.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The Slade nominates a student on the basis of their academic performance. Selection is based on your ranking and your progress on the course, not on a form you have to fill in.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is presented to just one student of painting or drawing at the Slade each year; the recipient is selected not through an open competition but on the basis of nomination. It is not possible to apply for it directly. The chances of winning depend entirely on the quality of the work produced during the first year of study. Those who rank among the best painters or draughtsmen in their year have good prospects.
