About this scholarship
What you get
With this scholarship, PhD students received approximately 3,450 EUR for one year of geographical fieldwork in the Global South, i.e. in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The Royal Geographical Society (in collaboration with the IBG) funded it through a donation from two of its members, Paul and Mary Slawson. Over the course of its existence, it has supported more than 60 doctoral field research projects on development topics with clear social and economic benefits.
This programme has ended. The Slawson Prizes were awarded from 2001 to 2022 and are no longer awarded. The Royal Geographical Society continues to award other postgraduate scholarships, including the ‘Postgraduate Research Awards’, the ‘Frederick Soddy Postgraduate Award’, the ‘Geographical Club Award’, the ‘Hong Kong Research Grant’ and the ‘Dudley Stamp Memorial Award’.
