Philharmonia (Music) Scholarship

You will receive 2026/27 up to £500 (about 580 EUR) for the academic year to help fund music lessons. If you play two instruments, you can split the amount between the lesson fees for both instruments and also use it to buy sheet music and equipment. The grant is valid for one academic year and may be renewed depending on your progress. You can also perform at the Attenborough Arts Centre’s ‘Soundbites’ lunchtime concerts, get to know the university’s music societies and receive support in finding free rehearsal spaces. The scholarship is administered by the Attenborough Arts Centre at the University of Leicester in collaboration with the volunteer coordinator of ‘Student Music’.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Leicester.
• Degree level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate course.
• Subject: You can study any subject.
• Musical skill: You play an instrument or sing, whatever your style or genre. There is no minimum mark, and you do not need any formal musical qualifications.
• Commitment: You practise regularly and take part in the university’s musical life, for example by joining music societies or taking part in performances.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Please complete the music scholarship application form and email it to the Attenborough Arts Centre by Monday, 12 October 2026 at 23:59. Please also complete the short equal opportunities form. If you are shortlisted, you will perform two pieces, each approximately 5 minutes long, at a face-to-face audition on 29 October 2026, and will be notified of the result within a week. Applicants with a disability who meet the criteria are guaranteed an audition.

How realistic are your chances?

Each year, only a limited number of scholarships are awarded, and the selection panel chooses a balanced group representing a variety of styles, genres and performance levels. The scholarship is open to musicians from all disciplines and at all levels of proficiency, ensuring a broad spectrum of talent. In the entrance audition, however, genuine musicality and commitment are valued more highly than technical perfection. If you can demonstrate genuine ability and are willing to contribute to the university’s musical life, your prospects are good.
