About this scholarship

Albin Salton Fellowship

You will receive a scholarship of about 1,580 EUR for a two months research stay at the Warburg Institute, which is part of the University of London in Bloomsbury. The funding will cover your living expenses whilst you make use of the Institute’s library, archives and photographic collection. Your research should focus on cultural contacts between Europe, the Orient and the New World during the late Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the early modern period, as well as on how Europe’s world view changed as it established contacts beyond its own borders. The fellowship is funded by a bequest from Albin Salton, a businessman with an interest in travel, art and antiques.

Who can apply

  • Level: You have already obtained a doctoral degree (postdoctoral qualification), regardless of what stage of your career you are at.
  • Field: Your project falls within the field of cultural, intellectual or art history and ties in with the theme of early contacts between Europe and the rest of the world.
  • Where you work: You will spend the two months of your research work on site at the Warburg Institute in London.
  • Nationality: Open to all nationalities.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the School of Advanced Study’s scholarship portal. The deadline for applications is 28 November.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is narrowly defined: it is aimed exclusively at postdoctoral researchers whose research aligns with a specific topic and who are able to spend two months in London. As a result, the pool of suitable applicants remains small. If your project clearly falls within the ‘Europe and the Rest of the World’ focus area and you can present a compelling research proposal, your chances are good.
