About this scholarship
What the Aranmore Memorial Travelling Scholarships give you
You will receive a grant of one-off travel grant of about 290 to 580 EUR (ranging from £250 to £500) to fund travel and research in Europe relating to your field of specialism. This is a one-off payment, not a monthly allowance. The University of Edinburgh awards up to six of these grants each year, including the Norman Kemp-Smith Memorial Fund.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are studying at the University of Edinburgh’s College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
- Level: You are a Bachelor’s student in your second or third year and are working towards a degree.
- Field of study: You are studying a subject in the humanities.
- Type of trip: The trip must be your own idea and must be related to your degree programme. Trips that are a compulsory part of your degree do not count.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
How to apply
Please complete the online application form by 1 May each year (5 British time). You will also need an academic reference. Please ask your supervisor or another academic staff member who is involved in your planned trip to complete the separate recommendation form.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is aimed exclusively at second- and third-year students of the humanities at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in Edinburgh, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is small. As up to six scholarships are awarded each year, a suitable applicant with a clear, subject-related travel plan and a convincing recommendation stands a good chance. A convincing reason for the trip is more important than a polished presentation.
