About this scholarship
What the Music/Performing Arts Scholarship gives you
You will receive up to 10 free music lessons per year (worth approximately 740 EUR) towards one year of your physics degree at the University of Birmingham. The tuition covers an instrument at Grade 8, the highest standard level in British music examinations. The University’s music department organises the tuition. Depending on availability, lessons will be delivered by university lecturers or staff from the Birmingham Conservatoire. This is tuition, not a cash payment. The award is provided by the School of Physics and Astronomy.
Who can apply
- Degree: You have been admitted to a physics degree programme at the University of Birmingham (BSc or MSci). This also includes specialisms such as astrophysics, particle physics, data science, medical physics and theoretical physics.
- Music level: You hold a music qualification at level 8, the highest level of the British standard examinations.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
You do not need to apply in advance. The university will contact suitable candidates once they have been admitted and will then inform you of the deadline and the documents you need to submit.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is subject to strict criteria: you must be admitted to a physics degree programme in Birmingham and already play an instrument to the standard of 8, meaning that very few people meet both conditions at the same time. If you clearly fit this profile, your chances are good. The pool of eligible applicants is small, and the main benefit lies in the teaching role rather than in the substantial financial reward that many applicants are seeking.
