About this scholarship
Benefit
You will receive all your tuition fees paid as well as a scholarship of £10,000 (approx. 11,500 EUR) for one academic year. The amount will be paid in instalments of £800 (about 950 EUR) per month over 11 months into a UK bank account. In addition, you will receive a one-off grant of £1,200 (approximately 1,400 EUR) to cover your return flight and travel expenses. The scholarship covers a one-year Master’s programme. It is awarded by the Canada Memorial Foundation, a UK charity that promotes academic cooperation between the UK and Canada.
Eligibility
There are two possibilities: British students who go to Canada to study, and Canadian students who come to the UK to study.
- Degree level: You will be starting a one-year Master’s programme. PhDs are not funded.
- Field of study: Any subject area, such as art, natural sciences, economics or political science. Canadian applicants studying political science will be given preference.
- If you are British: You are a British citizen and live in the UK. You hold, or are due to obtain, a degree with a ‘First’ or ‘Upper Second Class’ classification. You can provide valid reasons as to why you wish to study at an accredited university in Canada.
- If you are Canadian: You live in Canada and have already been offered a place at a leading British university. You have an excellent academic record and plan to return to Canada afterwards. You have at least 3 years’ professional experience and are under the age of 28 on the cut-off date.
- Qualities: You can demonstrate leadership and act as an ambassador between the two countries.
How to apply
Applications are submitted online via the joint platform of the Canada Memorial Foundation and the Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund. The application period begins in October and ends in late January or mid-February. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview at the start of the new year by a panel comprising members of the Board of Trustees and the Foundation’s Academic Committee.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is granted to very few applicants: each year, only a handful of people receive it. They must fit one of two specific pathways between the UK and Canada, whilst demonstrating outstanding academic results and strong leadership qualities. The Canadian pathway also imposes a strict age limit and requires professional experience, which further narrows the pool of applicants. If you clearly fit one of the two pathways and can provide a compelling reason for studying abroad, your chances are good. Good grades alone are not enough.
